FIA 8856-2018 Homologation

What does the expiration date mean?

FIA 8856-2018 Homologation is the first racing apparel standard to have an expiration date on the label. This date is 10 years after the production date of the garment. For example, if your coveralls were produced in 2020, the expiration date is the end of 2030.

When does this expiration date apply to FIA 8856-2018 Homologation?

The expiration date is currently only relevant for FIA-organized events. Older overalls may still be accepted for national events, but this may change in the future.

What does the label say?

The label of an FIA 8856-2018-approved garment contains a gold hologram and the statement "Not valid after" followed by the expiration date. This label is mandatory for all new racing apparel that meets this standard.

What if your coveralls don't have an expiration date?

If your overalls do not have an expiration date, they are probably approved to the older FIA 8856-2000 standard. For FIA events (not applicable for all championships), this standard is still valid until Dec. 31, 2027.

If your racing coverall has an expiration date that is 10 years from the date of manufacture, it is correct according to the FIA 8856-2018 standard. Check the label of your overalls to confirm the exact expiration date.

It is important to note that while the expiration date on an FIA 8856-2018-approved race coverall is correct, this date is only a guideline for the validity of the garment according to the standard.

To be on the safe side, you should always:

  • Consult the rules of the particular contest or competition.
  • Each race organizer may have specific requirements as to what race attire is valid.
  • Some national or local events accept older overalls or have different rules.
  • Check that the coverall is correctly homologated.
  • Look at the label with the hologram and the indication of the expiration date.
  • Make sure your coveralls meet the latest standards applicable to the event in which you are participating.
  • Regularly update your knowledge.

FIA standards and national regulations may change.

Reading the regulations in advance will prevent your clothing from not being approved during technical inspections.

In short: the expiration date on your coveralls is important, but more importantly, always consult the current contest rules. That way you can avoid surprises and participate without any problems.
