The History of Arai - Pioneer in Helmet Safety

From Hat Maker to Global Helmet Manufacturer

The origins of Arai Helmets date back to 1937, when Horitake Arai, son of a milliner, founded a company in Ohmiya, Saitama (Japan) dedicated to the development of head protection. This led to the introduction of the first HA (Helmet Arai) helmets.

In 1952 Arai took a revolutionary step by starting production of FRP (Fibre Reinforced Plastics, glass fiber reinforced plastic) helmets. This innovative material has been the basis of every Arai auto and motorcycle helmet ever since, with safety and durability always at the forefront.

Ten years later, in 1962, Michio Arai, Horitake's son, joined the family business. He focused on the international export of Arai helmets, which led to the first helmet production according to SNELL certification in 1963. This was a milestone that enabled exports to the United States and cemented Arai's global reputation as a leader in helmet safety.

Innovation and Growth in the Hell Industry

The following decades were marked by technological progress and expansion:

✅ 1968 - The first full-face R-6M helmet was produced, which met SNELL 1968 standards.
✅ 1971 - Launch of the new Arai logo, which has remained unchanged to this day.
✅ 1986 - Founder Horitake Arai died on June 14, and his son Michio Arai took over as president. That same year, the company name was changed to "Arai Helmet, Limited.

Under the leadership of Michio Arai, Arai grew into a leading global brand, beloved by both professional racers and everyday motorcyclists.

Since 2008, Akihito Arai, Michio's son, has been active in the company and became the managing director of Arai Helmet Europe. Under his supervision, innovation within Arai has continued.

Why is an Arai Helmet Unique?

An Arai helmet is not just any helmet. Each model is produced with the highest precision and meets the strictest safety requirements. The production of an outer shell alone requires 27 steps and the total manufacturing time of a helmet averages 18 hours.

The Perfect Combination: Hard Outer Shell & Soft Inner Shell

Arai has a unique philosophy when it comes to helmet safety:

• Hard outer shell - Prevents penetration and deformation on impact.
  
• Soft inner shell - Absorbs shock energy and distributes impact.

The manufacturing process of a fiberglass Arai hel met is complex and labor-intensive. This explains why Arai helmets are not manufactured in low-wage countries such as India or China, but are produced entirely in Japan to ensure the highest quality standards.

How Is an Arai Helmet Made?

1. Fabrication of the outer shell - The helmet begins with the placement of fiberglass lamellae in a 180° pre-heated steel mold.
2. Resin injection & pressure forming - An air bellows is placed in the mold and the outer shell is "baked" under high pressure.
3. Precision grinding - The outer shell is carefully ground and checked.
4. Inner shell mounting - The soft inner shell attaches inside the helmet for maximum shock absorption.
5. Finish and detail work - The visor, ventilation system and inner liner are assembled.

Outer shell: The Arai Standard

A major difference between Arai and other helmet brands is the consistent thickness of the outer shell. Five different sizes of outer shells are produced for each model (for XS to XL), ensuring a perfect fit and optimal protection.

Other brands often make only two or three shell sizes, so the thickness varies at some points. With Arai, the protective effect remains the same across the entire helmet, regardless of size.

Quality control is essential at Arai. Where many manufacturers perform spot checks, at Arai every helmet is tested and inspected twice.

This double inspection came about when Horitake Arai discovered during a factory tour that a professional rider's helmet was always checked twice by an inspector. When he asked why, the answer was simple: "Because safety should always come first."

Since then, every Arai helmet - both for consumers and professional racers - is checked twice as standard. This unique process ensures that every helmet that leaves the factory meets the highest safety and quality standards.
